What is EPUB?
EPUB (Electronic PUBlication format) is a worldwide open ebook standard for "reflowable" content. Unlike PDF which faithfully renders a "virtual" presentation of an original document, EPUB presents text and graphics as a single dynamic column of content, which re-flows according to the parameters of the medium in which it appears (generally an eBook reader, a portable/mobile device, or in a software reader on a PC).
Established by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), EPUB became an official standard in September, 2007, superseding the older Open eBook standard. There are many software and hardware applications compatible with the EPUB format, including Adobe Digital Editions, Stanza, Calibre, Bookworm, Unbound Reader, FBReader, Mobipocket Reader, Sony's Portable Reader, Amazon's Kindle, and many others. Even iPhone, Blackberry, and other mobile devices are either directly compatible with EPUB or capable of running EPUB-compliant software.
On the technical side, EPUB file organization is similar to a web page. Indeed, an eBook reader is analogous to a web browser in many respects. Some eBook readers even provide the ability to connect to the Internet, much like FireFox or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
One of the most challenging aspects of creating a good eBook text/graphic presentation is rendering it as closely as possible to the original book while still maintaining a natural, comfortable read. It's not as easy as it sounds. This challenge faces every conscientious publisher when converting printed books into quality EPUB documents.
Ultimately, good construction techniques and close compliance with the EPUB specification are the most important factors with respect to compatibility. Fortunately, the differences among eBook readers from different manufacturers are becoming fewer as technology continues to advance and more manufacturers become EPUB-compliant. Phillips Company recently demonstrated a new full-color. low-power electronic paper (e-paper) technology, which is expected to significantly boost the quality of the next generation of eBook readers.
